A Few Changes and Reminders..

Please note that Group 9 will do their presentation on Sunday, 9 August or moved back for one week.
We will have a "catch-up" lecture on August 2 to make up for all the material missed this week.

Note that attendance will still be taken. If you miss the lecture, make sure you contact your classmates to find out what you missed. Missing too many classes and being late for class will affect your grade. Be wise about being absent and late.

Group 1: Cosmetic & Beauty Makeover, Photo Service, & Karaoke

Evaluation: OK

Although you have tried to create something different, and may attract people to watch. I don't think this will be a profitable venture. I feel that students will most likely watch but not buy. I would suggest trying to find a service which can fit into the limited time period (three days) with less start-up capital.

Group 2: Robotic Cafe

Evaluation: OK

Good idea with a poor execution. A real robot will be an attention-getter but is it possible? I feel this was still a raw idea from your brainstorming session without thinking realistically on how to really implement the idea. In addition, you may need to consider charging a “student rate” for food is enough to cover the cost of renting or purchasing a real robot for three days.

Group 3: Band with DJ

Evaluation: OK

This is quite common and needs more creative approaches. Even through you had suggested to additional activities such as water painting, a photo booth, T-shirts, and recycled products to attract the audience, I haven’t seen any new ideas which will generate a profit.

Group 4: Mango Belly

Evaluation: Good

I liked the unique mango theme. Mangos are simple, cheap, and widely available when in season. If your group decides to sell mango-themed products then this may be successful to attract customers and make money at the same time. If you had more time, you may consider more creative ideas to fit this theme such as food and apparel.

Group 5: Cooling Curtain

Evaluation: OK

I liked the creative approach you found which may be very useful in the area’s climate. However, this does not fit a students’ budget. Especially since you have suggested some advanced technologies that needs to be incorporated into the product.

Group 6: Artist Café with Bizarre Foods

Evaluation: Good

Your idea in serving bizarre foods (similar to Andrew Zimmern’s TV show) is what makes this a creative venture. Cockroaches, lizards, and super spicy chicken wings may attract attention but will they sell enough to make a profit?

Group 7: Companion Service

Evaluation: Good

This is an interesting idea which may blossom into a profitable venture. You receive high marks for creativity but I see some fundamental problems in execution. Providing a “companion” for strangers (even though they are UUM students) may be place the companion at risk. But if everything goes smoothly, it will definitely be a fun idea.

Group 8: Mission Impossible

Evaluation: Excellent

A creative idea which fits the market (students) and addresses a need (student problems). Your venue has very low start-up capital by offering a service which, if managed properly, may return a profit. I thought it was a creative for you to think outside the box in terms of trying to offer a mediation service between couples, friends and even academics. This could be very useful for new students who are still unsure of the UUM system.

Group 9: Band / Song Dedication / Games & Services

Evaluation: OK

Your idea was scheduled very nicely by incorporating different events for different days such as a band for students, a “Fear Factor” competition, and others however there is no real focus in your idea. I was under the impression that this will be a variety booth which incorporates too many things in too little time. This may have an effect on profitability and execution. Perhaps it would be more useful if you chose the best idea from the brainstorming session and developed it further.

Group 10: Shell Souvenirs

Evaluation: Needs Improvement

This is a very common idea in night markets. You may make a profit by selling souvenirs but you need to think of more creative ideas in order to get attention from other souvenir booths.

Credit Points

Since the beginning of this semester, I have been tracking down students who are more active in class than others. This will add towards your individual assignment grade (20% of your total class grade). I suggest that everybody should have at least one or two credit points before the end of the semester in order to receive an A for this grade.

So far, the following students have received credit points (in descending order):

114196
112796
113157
113615
114286

Late for Class?

Just so you know, I will have a 10 minute buffer for lateness. Which means that you are expected to be in class before 11:10am to sign the regular attendance sheet. After 11:10am, you will sign a special attendance sheet on my desk, which indicates that you are late. I will only allow a few late arrivals before it starts to affect your individual grade. If you have a problem in coming on-time (for example: if you have another class before this one which take more than 10 minutes to walk to SE06) please see me in my office or make an appointment and we can discuss an alternative solution. Bottom line: avoid being late. Its not professional and not fair for the rest of the class.

Assignment: Elements of Creativity

Note that the fist assignment is due this Tuesday (July 14). The assignment is to find an image/design/video/advertisement or anything that you think is creative and send it to my assignment email (graduate at gmail dot com). You will also need to write a brief, one paragraph explanation why you think its creative.

You will not receive a grade for this assignment BUT if you do not turn one in, I will deduct your individual assignment grade. Be smart and complete all the assignments in this class.

This Wednesday, we will discuss the elements of creativity based on your submissions.
